September Newsletter and Class List

Hey everyone hope your summer was a fun and relaxing one.  Mine was a bit busy with moving my son Billy from Miami to Orlando and getting my daughter Kami back to school at FSU.  I know I know all of you are gator fans but in this household are true FSU fans through and through.  Les and all his brothers went to FSU and Kami is keeping the Tradition alive.  She is in her senior year there and loving every minute of it.  It Doesn’t hurt that the love of her life is there also.  We love Herman too.  He is a great person and we consider him part of the family.

We are now back to being empty nesters and boy is the house awful quite.  I should be able to get some things done that I have wanted to do for a long time.  Wish me luck.

I’m very excited to be going to a retreat in Dillard, Georgia  September 10 – 13 with Sandi from the shop.  It’s is my very first retreat I can hardly stand the waiting for our departure.  Looking forward to all the good food I will be eating and learning some new things that I can bring back for all of you.  I will take lots of pictures and share them with you.

I have tried to pack September full of classes.  Some are repeats and we also have a few new ones.  Please remember if you might have any suggestions of classes you want me to offer I would love to hear from you.  Feel free to email them to me.  We have also started  UFO nights here at the Sewcial Sewciety and they have been a great success.  Come sit and sew or bring a project you might need help with.  We usually send out for take out and just have a great time laughing, chatting and eating.  Oh, and maybe some sewing might get done???????

Quick Trip Around the World

50$ includes Dinner

Supplies Needed:  First of all you will need the book.  These can be purchased at JoAnns using a coupon or on for about 16$ with shipping on the new and used section.  One of my students just purchased it on the Amazon site.  We will be doing the Lap size version for class purposes.   So you will need 1/2 yard of 9 coordinating fabrics.  You can use the book as a guide in placement.  you will also need 1/2 yard each for inner border and binding.  Also 1-1/4 yard for outer border.

The Book will also have these measurements.  If you would like we could meet to pick fabric out if you might need help.  Just email me and we can set up a time.

This class will be an all day class starting at 10 am and finishing up hopefully when top is complete.   It can be done.  You will come with your strips already cut and ready to be sewn.  You will also need to make you fabric quide placement cheat sheet.  This is very helpful as the day goes on and your eyes straining.

The cutting is as follows:  You need to cut three 4″ strips from each of your 9 fabrics.  Out of the corner of each fabric that is left over cut your piece that is needed for your cheat sheet.

This class should be great fun.  I will also be providing dinner.  It will consist of Lasagna, salad and garlic bread.  Sweet tea will be provided also along with desert.  You will need to bring a lunch or snack to help fight off the hunger pains around noon or sew.  We will eat about 5 pm.

There will also be door prizes given throughout the day.  Hope  you all can make this class because it should be a lot of fun.

Wallet Class

Back again by popular demand:  This wallet always turns heads.  Everywhere I go and take it out to use it someone is asking me if I made it or if it is a Vera Bradley.  I love it when I tell them that I made it.  Their facial expressions are priceless.

Supplies needed:  You will need a 1/2 yard of three different coordinating fabrics.  One 9″ zipper to match, one 3/4″ magnetic  closure, cotton batting or *soft and stable, one yard woven fusible interfacing, coordinating thread, and one decorative button.  Please bring the usual sewing supplies and a walking foot is imperative.

*Soft and Stable is a wonderful product that replaces batting.  Where you would have used batting you would instead use Soft and Stable.  Some quilt shops carry it or you can get it online.  I love the durability of it.  I have used in both the wallet and some of the purses I have recently made and it is much more sturdier that batting.  Gives a more professional look to your finished product.

August Class Schedule

Hey everyone, thanks for visiting my blog and welcome to the new class schedule for August.  I will be having a few make up classes for those of you who wanted to take what was offered for July and some new classes for gift giving and one new quilt technique class.  Also I will offer a beginner cross stitch class for those of you who would like to take up a new hobby or for those of you who want a refresher course.

I also wanted to give you all a little bit of info on what to bring to class.  This way all of you will have the opportunity to gather them all up and put them in an oh sew cute box, basket or bag and have them ready to bring to class.

Things you will always need to bring to class:  Thread to match project ( I always bring other colors too, just in case I would like my quilting or decorative stitching to show), sewing machine needles, extra bobbins, seam ripper, marking tools, pins, hand sewing needles, fabric cutting scissors, paper cutting scissors, one chopstick (for turning), all the feet that come with your machine, machine manual and last but not least always and I mean always bring your WALKING FOOT with you to class.  You should practice taking it on and off so you feel good about using it.  It will come in handy for many of the projects that we do.

I want everyone in my classes to have a wonderful experience and a great time.  We laugh, we cry and we sew our hearts out.  I look forward to seeing you all soon in the Sew Sistah’s Classroom.

Stripy Stars

August 11, 2012

10 – 2 pm

This class is a fun and fast way to make stars.  Choose one jelly roll and a background fabric and you are ready to make 40 star blocks.  Each strip from a Jelly Roll makes one block and one corner stone block.   You will need to 5 yards of fabric for background and for sashing.  Choose border to match and purchase 1-3/4 yards for border.   You will also need to bring to the class your sewing basket full of all the above mentioned things.

Homework:  You will need to come with your fabric cut.  This will be cutting all of your 40, 2-1/2″ strips.  From each strip you will need to cut four 4″ strips, four 6″ strips and one 2-1/2″ square.  You should have forty strips in your jelly roll.

From your background fabric you will need to cut 320, 2-1/2″  squares and 160, 4″ squares.

This is what you need to bring to class already cut.  If you are using a dark background like I did you will need to bring the correct marking tool so that you will be able to see the line you have drawn.

Bring lunch or a snack.  I will provide the sweet tea.

X’s & O’s Quilt

August 25, 2012

This is such a great technique to learn and a quick quilt to make.  Its size is approximately 52″ x 62″  and looks great hanging over the back of a couch or for that new little addition to the family.  I made mine for my new little great nephew that is due anytime.  My colors reminded me of the water which they love  to be near so that is why I chose the batik charm squares I did.

Supplies Needed:  you will need to purchase 2 charm packs and one yard of background fabric.  The inner border will also require 1/2 yard, outer border will need  one yard and binding 1/2 yard.  You will need 3 yards for the backing.

Homework:  you will need to come with your background fabric cut into 2-1/2″ squares.  You will need 160 total.

You will need to bring your sewing basket with all your supplies and a good marking tool.
